Armier Bay Anchorage Guide

Also known as: Il-Bajja tal-Armier, Little Armier, Armier Beach Malta

Armier Bay is the favourite anchorage of Maltese local boaters — a twin-bay system (Armier and Little Armier) on the northeast side of the Mellieħa peninsula, facing Gozo. Excellent sand holding in 2–7m of crystal-clear water. The beach is lined with a unique Maltese institution: a seasonal village of boathouses, caravans, and summer structures owned by Maltese families — a colourful and authentic scene. Protected from westerly and southerly winds. Exposed to the north and Gregale NE gale. On summer weekends the bay fills with Maltese motorboats — arrive early for a spot.

The Anchorage

Anchorage in Armier Bay — a sister bay to Mellieħa, located on the northeast side of the same peninsula. Excellent sand holding in 2–7m. The bay has two sections: Armier Bay (main) and Little Armier (inner, shallower). Protected from SW through NW. Exposed to N and NE (Gregale). Very popular with Maltese local boaters and a seasonal boathouse village (caravans and boat storage structures) fronts the beach. Clear water with good visibility.

Setting Your Anchor

The bottom at Armier Bay is primarily sand with reliable holding when properly set.

  1. Monitor VHF Ch 16 for Malta Radio — the coast guard monitors continuously. Ferry and commercial vessel traffic in St Paul's Bay area requires attention.
  2. Anchor in 27m. Malta's tidal range is negligible (<30cm) — no tidal depth correction needed. Wind-driven sea level variation up to 0.5m possible in strong winds.
  3. Deploy at least 5:1 scope (35m chain at 7m depth). Verify the bottom is sand — check for Posidonia seagrass (EU protected) before dropping the anchor.
  4. Set firmly in reverse — 30–60 seconds at moderate throttle. Use the scope calculator to confirm adequate chain.

Recommended anchor types: Rocna, Spade, Delta, Bruce.

Overnight Anchoring & Anchor Alarm

Overnight stays at Armier Bay are best in settled conditions — the anchorage is exposed to N and NE winds. The primary overnight hazard in north Malta is the Gregale NE gale (Nov–Mar): north-facing bays become dangerous — seek shelter in Grand Harbour or Marsaxlokk Bay immediately at any Gregale forecast.

Set your GPS anchor alarm to 75m radius before going below. 75m radius in 3–5m excellent clean sand. Outstanding holding. Exposed to N and NE (Gregale) — leave in forecast NE conditions November–March. Very popular with local Maltese boaters — busy in summer weekends.

May–October. Very busy July–August weekends with local boats. April, May, September, October are more peaceful but still attractive. Avoid November–March in NE forecast conditions.

Navigation Hazards

  • NE exposure (Gregale) — dangerous in NE gale conditions; leave for Gozo or Grand Harbour immediately if Gregale forecast November–March
  • Very busy summer weekends — local motorboats fill the bay; arrive Friday morning for the best position
  • Shallow near the boathouse structures — maintain 50m clearance from shore

Rules & Regulations

  • EU member (not Schengen): No customs formalities for EU boats arriving from EU ports. Non-EU boats: Grand Harbour (Valletta) is the official 24/7 customs clearance point for Malta mainland. EES biometric recording required for non-EU crew since October 2025.
  • Posidonia: EU protected throughout Maltese waters — anchor only in sand or mud patches. Fines apply. Use mooring buoys where provided.
  • Anchoring fee: Free
  • Restrictions: Boathouse structures along the beach — keep clear. Shallow near shore. N and NE exposure: leave in Gregale forecast. Very busy summer weekends with local boats.

  1. Arrive Friday morning to secure a good position before weekend crowds — a favourite Maltese summer anchorage
  2. Superb water clarity — snorkeling directly from the boat in 3–4m is excellent

  4. Good staging anchorage for the Gozo crossing — Mġarr harbour is 6nm NW

A note on this guide: Data has been researched from multiple sailing sources and is provided in good faith. Conditions — depth, holding, regulations — can change. Always check forecasts and current official charts before visiting. Use a GPS anchor alarm and never rely solely on a guide for navigational decisions.

Sleep peacefully at Armier Bay

Safety Anchor Alarm monitors your GPS position continuously — essential in north Malta where the Gregale NE gale can develop overnight and turn Mellieħa Bay's excellent anchorage into a dangerous lee shore.
