Marsaxlokk Outer Bay Anchorage Guide
Also known as: Marsaxlokk south anchorage, Birzebbuga outer, Marsaxlokk SE approach
The outer southern section of Marsaxlokk Bay offers deeper water anchorage in 7–20m over sand and mud with good holding — suitable for larger vessels that cannot access the shallower inner bay areas. Wide open bay with ample swinging room. Commercial shipping traffic for the Freeport terminal operates on the western side — maintain a 0.5nm clearance from that shipping lane. Exposed to south and southeast. A practical anchorage for large vessels transiting the central Mediterranean.

Good anchorage for large vessels that cannot fit into the shallower inner bay areas.
Setting Your Anchor
The bottom at Marsaxlokk Outer Bay is primarily sand and mud with reliable holding when properly set.
- Monitor VHF Ch 16 for Malta Radio — Marsaxlokk Bay has active Freeport commercial shipping. Large container vessels have priority and operate at all hours from the east side of the bay.
- Anchor in 7–20m. Malta's tidal range is negligible (<30cm) — no tidal depth correction needed. Wind-driven sea level variation up to 0.5m possible in strong winds.
- Deploy at least 5:1 scope (100m chain at 20m depth). Verify the bottom is sand or mud — check for Posidonia seagrass (EU protected) before dropping the anchor.
- Set firmly in reverse — 30–60 seconds at moderate throttle. Use the scope calculator to confirm adequate chain.
Recommended anchor types: Rocna, Spade, Delta.
Overnight Anchoring & Anchor Alarm
Overnight stays at Marsaxlokk Outer Bay are best in settled conditions — the anchorage is exposed to S and SE and E winds. The primary overnight hazard in Marsaxlokk is the Xlokk (Scirocco) SE wind: when it blows, the entire bay faces directly into the swell — seek shelter in Grand Harbour immediately at any strong SE forecast.
Set your GPS anchor alarm to 120m radius before going below. 120m radius in 10–15m deep sand/mud. Good holding. Large vessels only — plenty of room. Freeport commercial shipping on western side — maintain 0.5nm clearance. Open to S/SE: leave in Xlokk forecast.
April–October in NW/W conditions. Practical transit and overnight stop for larger vessels. SE exposure: leave if Xlokk develops.
Navigation Hazards
- Freeport commercial shipping — large container vessels; maintain minimum 0.5nm clearance from shipping lane
- SE/S (Xlokk) exposure — leave for Grand Harbour in strong southerly forecast
- Deep water — need significant chain for adequate scope
