About This Anchorage
Ķesterciems offers one of the most truly wild coastal anchorages in the Gulf of Riga — a pristine white sand beach backed directly by ancient pine forest, with no village, no development, and no tourist infrastructure. This stretch of coast between Jūrmala and Engure is part of the protected Engure Nature Park coastal zone, where the dune landscape, pine forest, and shallow Baltic sea create a landscape of extraordinary natural beauty. Anchoring here in settled conditions gives a profound sense of the undeveloped Baltic coast as it existed before the resort development of Jūrmala — just sand, pines, sky, and water. The beach is typically deserted even at the height of summer. The water is clean and shallow, warming quickly in July to provide excellent swimming conditions. The pine forests directly behind the dunes are ancient — some trees are estimated at 200+ years old — and walking through them feels like stepping into a northern wilderness. For sailors with a self-sufficient approach to cruising, Ķesterciems represents one of the hidden gems of the Latvian coast.

Set Your Anchor Alarm to 70m
In Jūrmala's busy waters and near Riga's commercial port approaches, Baltic wind-driven water level changes and passing vessel wash can drag a poorly set anchor. Safety Anchor Alarm monitors your GPS position continuously during Latvia's Jun–Aug sailing season.
