Recommended Anchor Alarm Radius

100m

100m radius for good mud/sand holding in 4–10m. Larger radius due to depth and ship traffic. Maintain AIS at all times — commercial vessels move at speed through this area. The outer roads are a staging anchorage for entering Riga, not a comfortable overnight stop. Riga Yacht Club marina (3nm up the Daugava) is the recommended base.

About This Anchorage

The Daugavgrīva Roads sit at the approaches to the Daugava River — the great river of Latvia that bisects Riga and gave the city its commercial importance over eight centuries of trading history. Riga (founded 1201 by the Livonian Brothers of the Sword as a Crusader base) grew into one of the most important Hanseatic cities in the eastern Baltic, its merchants controlling the trade in amber, furs, grain, and timber. The city's extraordinary Art Nouveau architecture (the highest concentration in the world), medieval Old Town (UNESCO World Heritage), and cultural dynamism make it one of the most rewarding cities in the Baltic for visiting sailors. The outer roads provide a staging anchorage before negotiating the Daugava River entrance and navigating 3 miles upstream to the Riga Yacht Club marina at Andrejosta. The approach requires careful chart work — the TSS is active and commercial vessels move continuously through the main channel. The recommended approach is to call Riga Port on VHF Ch 16, confirm the channel is clear, and proceed without hesitation. The Riga Yacht Club at Andrejosta marina is welcoming to visiting yachts and provides the ideal base for exploring the Old Town (10 minutes walk).

Set Your Anchor Alarm to 100m

In Jūrmala's busy waters and near Riga's commercial port approaches, Baltic wind-driven water level changes and passing vessel wash can drag a poorly set anchor. Safety Anchor Alarm monitors your GPS position continuously during Latvia's Jun–Aug sailing season.
