About This Anchorage

Kappeln is the main town on the Schlei — the midpoint between Schleimünde (the Baltic entrance) and Schleswig (the head). The town has been a herring fishing centre since at least the 13th century — the last working herring trap fishery in Germany, the Aalreuse, is still in operation at Kappeln bridge. In May and June, the 'Schlei herring run' (Heringszug) drives Baltic herring up the Schlei — a natural phenomenon exploited by the same fixed-trap system for 700 years. The herring smokehouses (Räuchereien) along the Kappeln waterfront produce smoked sprats and herrings to the same traditional recipes. Kappeln has the best facilities on the entire Schlei: fuel, water, supermarket, chandlery, and a good selection of restaurants. The draw bridge (Klappbrücke) at Kappeln has been a Schlei landmark since 1925 — it opens on request for passage through.

Hazards

  • !Kappeln drawbridge: call VHF 12 or telephone for opening — it does not open on demand; check times before planning departure
  • !Draught limit 1.8m above (west of) Kappeln bridge — essential constraint for inner Schlei passage to Schleswig

  • !Eelgrass throughout — anchor in sandy patches or use the quays

Skipper's Tips

  • Buy smoked sprats from the Räucherei (smokehouse) on the waterfront — they are smoked overnight and best purchased before 10am; the finest herring product in Germany
  • The Heringszug (herring run, May–June) — watch the Aalreuse (fixed trap) lift from the quay; an extraordinary living tradition; the trap is 30m long and has been in the same position for 400 years
  • Kappeln is the best provisioning stop on the Schlei — stock up completely here for the inland voyage to Schleswig (20nm further up the fjord)
