About This Anchorage
Flensburg is the northernmost German city — a proud Hanseatic port and trading centre that has been at the junction of German and Danish cultures for centuries. The city has a long maritime history: in the 18th century, Flensburg's merchant fleet was larger than Hamburg's, trading in rum from the Danish West Indies. The famous Flensburger Rum tradition (Rumhandel) began here — the Rum Museum in the old harbour warehouse tells the story. The inner Förde (fjord) is Flensburg's defining feature: a 16km Baltic inlet penetrating deep into Schleswig-Holstein to within 30km of the North Sea. The historic harbour (Historischer Hafen) has preserved sailing ships, steamers, and working fishing vessels. Full city services and direct train connections to Kiel and Hamburg. The Danish border (and the dual German-Danish character of this region) is palpable — many residents speak both languages fluently.
