70m inside the Saksun lagoon — completely sheltered in all directions. Mud bottom gives excellent holding. The critical risk is the tidal bar on entry and exit, not weather. Set the alarm as a position-shift check rather than weather protection.
About This Anchorage
Saksun is frequently cited as one of the most beautiful villages in the North Atlantic — a cluster of turf-roofed stone farmhouses at the head of a long fjord whose entrance is partially closed by a dramatic tidal sandbar (Pollurin). The lagoon behind the bar, accessible only within approximately 2 hours of high water for boats with drafts under 1.5m, is completely sheltered from all weather. The village's ancient church (Dúvugarðar, 18th century, now a museum) sits among farmsteads that appear entirely unchanged since the Norse settlement period. The surrounding mountains, including Botnstindur, create a theatrical backdrop that has made Saksun the most-photographed village in the Faroe Islands. Access by sea is a genuine adventure — the tidal bar requires local knowledge or careful pilotage. The reward is one of the most sheltered and spectacular anchorages in Northern Europe.

Anchoring Rules
- Anchoring fee
- Free
- Permit required
- No
Restrictions: Tidal bar entry: draft limit approximately 1.5m within 2 hours of high water — check RAK app; maximum tide timing precision required; do not attempt entry in strong NW onshore conditions (swell breaks on the bar); the lagoon interior is a working farm environment — respect private property on shore.
Hazards
- !CRITICAL: Tidal bar (Pollurin) — draft limit ~1.5m; entry within 2 hours of high water only; bar dries to 0.5m at LW; strong NW swell can make the bar dangerous even at high water
- !Exit timing is equally critical — you can become trapped in the lagoon if you miss the tide window; plan entry AND exit before committing
- !Approach to the fjord entrance from seaward in northwesterly swell: the fjord is a natural swell funnel — approach in calm or light conditions only
- !No rescue services at Saksun — self-sufficient pilotage required
- !Chart coverage is minimal — use the most current electronic chart and approach by eyeball as well as GPS
Skipper's Tips
- →Use the RAK tide app to calculate high water at Saksun — allow 2 hours either side of HW for the bar crossing
- →The approach in the outer fjord: eyeball the channel by looking for the colour change from deep to shallow — green/brown water marks the bar
- →If in doubt about the bar, anchor in the outer fjord (2–3m, some swell exposure) and visit the village by dinghy at high water
- →The Dúvugarðar museum farmhouse is open June–August — the turf-roofed architecture is the finest example of traditional Faroese building in the islands
- →The walk from the lagoon to Botnstindur ridge takes 2 hours and gives panoramic views over the entire northwest Streymoy coast
