The outer islands of the Faroe Islands (Eysturoy, the northern islands, and Suðuroy) involve exposed North Atlantic passages with tidal races reaching 5–7 knots and breaking overfalls in the inter-island straits. Suðuroy (Fámjin and Vágur) requires a minimum 2-day settled weather window and offshore passage preparation. The RAK tide app is mandatory for all inter-island passage planning. Build 3+ days of weather buffer into all departure plans from exposed anchorages. Nearest rescue services are based in Tórshavn — helicopter response time 30+ minutes to the outer islands.
