About This Anchorage
Kihnu is one of the most remarkable islands in the Baltic — a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage site protecting the unique matriarchal culture of Kihnu island women. With a permanent population of only 500–600, the island became matriarchal because Kihnu men traditionally spent months away seal hunting and fishing in the Gulf of Riga, leaving women to run the farms, community, and cultural life. The women of Kihnu still wear the traditional striped woollen skirts (kört) as everyday clothing — red and blue stripes indicating marital status. The handicraft tradition (weaving, knitting, embroidery) is maintained actively. The island has a lighthouse (1864), museum, church, and a Kihnu-style roadstead where musicians still gather to sing the ancient Estonian runic songs (regilaul). Visiting sailors are warmly welcomed but asked to be respectful of the living culture.
