About This Anchorage

Marstal is the largest town on Ærø island and Denmark's greatest maritime museum town — for centuries the island supplied a disproportionate share of Danish merchant navy captains. The Marstal Maritime Museum (Søfartsmuseet) contains the most impressive collection of ship models, navigation instruments, and maritime paintings outside Copenhagen. The harbour, built from 1783, accommodates 200+ berths. The outer anchorage in Marstal Bugt is comfortable in westerly and northerly conditions — the prevailing summer pattern — on sand and mud. The town has good provisioning, restaurants, and a famous ice cream parlour (the island is known for its homemade ice cream). Marstal is on the Svendborg–Marstal ferry route (2 hours).

Anchoring Rules

Anchoring fee
Free (anchoring); harbour fee approx DKK 150–180/night
Permit required
No

Restrictions: Eelgrass fringe close inshore — anchor in sandy central area; speed limit 5kt; ferry traffic (Svendborg–Marstal) passes nearby; harbour VHF 12.

Hazards

  • !Open to east and NE — the Great Belt approach gives significant fetch; leave in easterly above F4
  • !Ferry traffic (Svendborg–Marstal) passes close — maintain clear passage
  • !Eelgrass fringe close inshore — anchor in sandy area only
  • !Shallow sandbanks extend 500m south of Ærø's east tip — use DA 198 chart approaching from south
  • !Busy harbour July–August — call VHF 12 for berth availability

Skipper's Tips

  • The Marstal Maritime Museum is the best maritime museum in the archipelago — 3,000 ship models, 9,000 navigation charts, and extraordinary stories of Ærø captains sailing worldwide
  • Rent a bicycle in Marstal and cycle the 15km to Ærøskøbing — the island lane through meadows and past farms is one of Denmark's finest cycle routes
  • The harbour kiosk sells fresh Ærø ice cream (is cream in Danish dialects: 'flødeis') — a genuine island tradition
  • Marstal's sheltered east bay is excellent for dinghy sailing and paddleboarding in settled conditions
  • Time the Svendborg ferry arrival (twice daily) to avoid ferry wash in the outer anchorage
