Recommended Anchor Alarm Radius

55m

55m for the sheltered fjord anchorage in 2–4m mud. The fjord provides excellent wind shelter — only a strong SW can generate any fetch. The main caution is the eelgrass fringe along the fjord edges — stay in the centre of the channel.

Setting Your Anchor

  1. 1.Check eelgrass chart (DKSOS app or Navionics) — anchor only on sandy or muddy bottom free of vegetation
  2. 2.Use 5:1 scope minimum — the Little Belt is almost tideless (0.3–0.5m tidal range); scope is about depth and holding, not tide
  3. 3.Remember: anchoring is tolerated for 1 night only in unoccupied natural anchorages — it is not a legal right in Denmark
  4. 4.Set your anchor alarm to 55m before sleeping — tidal currents through the narrows can cause unexpected swinging

About This Anchorage

Kolding Fjord is a narrow arm of the Little Belt penetrating 15km inland to the city of Kolding — a significant Danish city (population 90,000) with a beautifully preserved medieval castle (Koldinghus, partly reconstructed after an 1808 fire) dominating the skyline. The fjord anchorage near the city head offers good mud holding with excellent shelter from the fjord's natural wind protection. The city has full urban services, a vibrant waterfront restaurant district, and the Trapholt Museum of Modern Art (one of Denmark's finest modern art collections). The anchorage is a short dinghy row from the city centre.
