Prozura Anchorage Guide

Also known as: Uvala Prozura, Prozura Bay

Prozura is a deep, narrow fjord on the south coast of Mljet — one of the more dramatic and intimate overnight anchorages in the area. The typical arrangement of bow anchor with stern or spring line to the shore gives complete security in the deep water. Mud bottom holds excellently. The surrounding landscape of dense Mediterranean forest running to the waterline is atmospheric and beautiful. Outside the national park boundaries, so free anchoring is permitted. A handful of houses are visible at the head of the inlet but there are no tourist facilities. A wonderful overnight in solitude on a quiet night passage between Dubrovnik and Split.

The Anchorage

Prozura is a deep fjord-like inlet on the S coast of Mljet, outside the national park. The typical arrangement is bow anchor with stern or spring line to the rocky shore — take a long line to a ring or tree ashore (trees are permitted in this bay, unlike the SSVO restriction on natural features in some areas). Mud bottom with excellent holding. The narrow fjord shape provides outstanding protection from N, E, and S. Open to W and SW — afternoon Mistral can funnel down the inlet but it is manageable.

Setting Your Anchor

Bottom at Prozura: primarily mud. Deploy 7:1 scope minimum (105m at 15m). Set firmly in reverse and snorkel to verify bottom — avoid Posidonia (€2,000 fine).

Recommended anchor types: Rocna, Mantus, Spade, Delta.

Overnight Anchoring & Anchor Alarm

Set GPS anchor alarm to 70m radius. 70m appropriate for deep fjord anchoring with stern line to shore. Reduce to 50m when properly tied fore-and-aft. Mud holding is excellent. W and SW afternoon Mistral funnels into the inlet — keep stern line taut and add chafe protection.

Good May–October. One of the more solitary anchorages on Mljet — rarely more than 3–4 boats even in August. Perfect for crews wanting peace rather than facilities.

Navigation Hazards

  • Deep water requires good scope — minimum 7:1 in 10–15m; use all available chain
  • Stern line to shore essential — without it, boats can swing and foul each other in the narrow fjord
  • Afternoon Mistral funnels down from the W — keep stern line taut and chafe-protected
  • Limited space — maximum 4–5 boats can lie comfortably fore-and-aft

Skipper's Tips

  1. Bow anchor plus stern line to shore is the standard technique here — have a long warp ready (50m+) and a dinghy to take it ashore
  2. The mud holds so well that you may need significant throttle to break the anchor out on departure
  3. Best in the evening when Mistral drops — extremely peaceful and beautiful at night with stars visible through the forest canopy

A note on this guide: Always check current weather, NAVTEX/VHF bulletins, and HHI charts. Use a GPS anchor alarm — never rely solely on a guide for navigational decisions.
