40m

40m in the enclosed Minnewater lake on soft mud. Fully protected from all weather. The small lake limits swing room — the 40m alarm covers this. Mud holding is reliable. Draught strictly limited to 1.5m. The official marina (Handelsdok) has better facilities and is the recommended choice for larger yachts; Minnewater is for shallow-draught vessels under 10m LOA.

About This Anchorage

Bruges (Brugge) is the best-preserved medieval city in northern Europe — the 'Venice of the North' — a UNESCO World Heritage city of canals, belfries, and Flemish Gothic architecture that has been largely unchanged since the 15th century. The Minnewater (Lake of Love) at the southern edge of the old city is an ornamental lake with white swans (a medieval tradition since the 15th century), willow trees, and a 15th-century Sluispoort gate. Approaching Bruges by water via the Ghent-Ostend Canal is one of the great experiences of Belgian inland navigation — the city's medieval silhouette (Belfry, Sint-Salvatorskerk, Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk) rises above the flat polder landscape as you approach. The Bruges canal system (ring canal) allows yachts of up to 1.5m draught to reach the historic centre. The Handelsdok marina (800m from Markt) is the primary visitor marina. Must-see: Groeningemuseum (Flemish Primitive paintings by Jan van Eyck, Hans Memling), Markt square, and the 83m Belfry (366 steps, views over flat Flanders).

Anchoring Rules

Anchoring fee
Free (Minnewater); Handelsdok marina approx €20–30/night
Permit required
No

Restrictions: Draught maximum 1.5m; air draught maximum 4.0m through Bruges bridges; Minnewater: swans and waterfowl — no disturbance; speed limit 6km/h (3kt) on all Bruges canals; CEVNI rules apply; commercial traffic on outer ring canal — keep clear.

Hazards

  • !Draught limit 1.5m throughout Bruges ring canals — check air draught for each bridge (minimum 4.0m at HW)
  • !Tour boat traffic on city canals — the open canal boats (rondvaartboten) are continuous in summer; they have priority and right of way
  • !Ghent-Ostend Canal: commercial barge traffic — give way to all commercial vessels; CEVNI rules
  • !Lock at Siphon (Bruges ring canal): call VHF 10 for lock schedule
  • !Minnewater swans: protected under Belgian law — do not disturb nesting birds

Skipper's Tips

  • Book Handelsdok marina in advance for July and August — Bruges is one of Europe's most visited cities and the marina fills by midday; call the Bruges Harbour Master (Havenmeester Brugge) on VHF 10
  • Arrive via the Ghent-Ostend Canal from Zeebrugge — the approach past the Bruges railway station and into the ring canal reveals the medieval city skyline gradually; a beautiful approach
  • De Halve Maan brewery (Walplein 26) is the last working brewery in the historic centre — their underground beer pipeline to the bottling plant is a world first; book the tour in advance
  • The Groeningemuseum has the finest collection of Flemish Primitive paintings in the world — Jan van Eyck's 'Madonna van Kanselier Rolin' and Hans Memling's altarpieces are here; allow 2–3 hours
  • Hire city bicycles from the marina — Bruges is perfectly flat and bicycles are the ideal way to explore; the Begijnhof (beguinage), Sint-Janshospitaal, and Lake of Love are all within 15 minutes cycle
